SCURFA Watches Diver ONE [built for North Sea diving]

By TLex You would be forgiven for thinking that the name Scurfa is a portmanteau of 'scuba' and 'surf', however, apt as it may be, it in fact derives from Scurfa Watches, owner / founder's name, Paul Scurfield, a watch enthusiast and saturation diver.

Unwilling to risk a valuable vintage Rolex Submariner in his hostile workplace deep below the North Sea, Paul set about creating an affordable watch brand for his fellow SAT divers and support staff. A brand that offered no nonsense, no frills dive watches that were built to a high-standard and using equally high quality materials.

SAT DIVING Divers like Paul Scurfield, working in the North Sea are made up of teams of three. On any working dive there is a: Diver 1, Diver 2 and a Bellman. Diver 1 controls the dive, Diver 2 is there to support him and make his job safer and easier. The Bellman tends the divers from the diving bell.

Divers work in the water for a maximum six hours. A normal saturation diving system will house four teams of three divers covering a full 24hr working day and only stopping for bad weather or crew changes. The work period for divers is 28 days including decompression -

where divers spend long peroids of time in a Helium rich environment. A Helium Escape Valve is used to release Helium built up in the watch case, however this is a feature that the Diver One does without. Even to a seasoned SAT diver like Paul Scurfield it could be considered a little superfluous, an embellishment that and could be dispensed with if the diver were to simply unscrew his crown upon accent.

The Diver One has a 40mm in diameter 316L surgical grade Stainless steel case. It is fitted with a Sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, a 7mm screwdown crown, a screwdown caseback and a unidirectional divers bezel. The watch has a water-resistance of 200m / 600ft.

The Diver one is powered by high-precision Swiss quartz Ronda Power Tech movement. Quartz was specifically chosen for the Diver One because accuracy is critical to safety when it comes to timing dive times, decompression and pressure test times - no mistakes can be made! Finally Swiss SuperLuminova has been applied to the watch’s hands and dial markers for increased viibility in poor light conditions.

The Diver One is available with either: a black silicone divers strap, a black nylon NATO or a solid steel bracelet with divers wetsuit extension. It comes in a custom Scurfa box along with some strap changing tools. Prices start from 114GBP (NATO), which includes shipping.

CARTIER Calibre de Cartier DIVER 2ndLOOK

By TLex Here's another look at the new Calibre de Cartier DIVER, Cartier's first true divers watch if we are to dismiss the 100 meter Pasher Seatimer of a few years ago, not only that, but the Caliber de Cartier Diver complies with ISO 6425 for a divers watch.

Its round 42mm x 11mm (that's very slim for a 300m diver) case comes in either brushed Stainless steel (Ref. W7100056) or brushed and polished Rose Gold (Ref. W7100052). As mentioned earlier, its water resistance is a respectable 300 meters (1000ft / 30atm).

Divers features include: a DLC coated 120-click type unidirectional rotational divers bezel with a luminous dive-time scale, a faceted screwdown crown set with Cartier's signature blue spinel (synthetic gemstone).

The crown, which is a screwdown type is protected by detachable crown guard attached (as the lugs) are with flat head screws. The case back is secured by 8 screws; it's a shame that a proper threaded caseback wastn't used.

The dial has been designed for excellent legibility in the dark and has been applied with Swiss SuperLuminova to its hands and markers. The sword hands have been designed to be distguishable from each other, but the difference is too slight for my liking.

The watch is powered by a Cartier in-house automatic 1904-PS MC caliber with 27 jewels and a power reserve of 48 hours. It comes on either a black rubber divers strap or with a steel bracelet. Prices start from 5500euro for the steel version with a rubber strap.

CREPAS L'ocean 1200M PROTOTYPEs

By TLex I am very pleased to be able to share with you these exclusive images of the two CREPAS L'océan 1200M prototype watches.

For those not familiar with the L'océan 1200M; it is inspired by the rare and exotic Z.R.C 300m dive watch from the late 60s.

Crepas collaborated with their Facebook followers to help them decide upon some of the watch's key features such as its case back, bezel and crystal.

Like their debt model the Le Grand, Crepas once again went for a 1200M water-resistant diver with a vintage style yet fabricated using the latest in dive watch industry technologies.

The L'océan 1200M follows Crepas' tried and tested watch making formula that aims to enhance the original design so that it is bigger, stronger, and possibly even more beautiful!

Crepas will close sales of the L'océan 1200M on January 31st; after which point it will be impossible to purchase one from them.

OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean PLATINUM

By TLex Here’s another World Premiere from Omega, a diamond-set ceramic and Sapphire crystal, Seamaster Planet Ocean in solid Platinum. The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Platinum utilizes a complex technology that allows diamonds to be set into even the toughest of materials such as cceramic or Sapphire crystal.

The process begins by engraving the ceramic or Sapphire crystal with a specialized 5-axis laser that ensures the precision and the shape of each cavity. An exclusive 850-platinum Liquidmetal® alloy is then used to fill each of the openings, the excess is then removed before polishing. Finally diamonds are set into a Pt850 Liquidmetal® alloy using a traditional diamond-setting technique.

The Seamaster Planet Ocean boasts a 43.5mm combination brushed and polished 950-grade Platinum crafted case with a bi-directional 24hr GMT rotational bezel. The beveled edges of the case are fully paved with 69 trapezoidal baguette-cut diamonds; the polished black ceramic bezel is accentuated by twelve trapezoidal baguettes in the GMT scale and a full-cut diamond in the triangle at 24 o'clock. Together with the 31-full-cut-diamond-set Omega logo on the sapphire caseback, the watch has 113 diamonds with a combined weight 2.69 carats.

Below an anti-reflective treated, domed Sapphire crystal is a polished black ceramic dial with 18K white gold markers, numerals and hands. An OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8615 with a Si14 silicon balance spring, powers the watch. It features a GMT complication that allows the wearer to keep track of the time in a 2nd time zone.

The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean Platinum is water resistant to 600m / 2000 feet / 60 bar. It is presented on an integrated black leather strap with platinum stitching and a 950-grade Platinum foldover clasp. It comes with an additional black rubber divers strap along with a strap changing tools. It has been produced in an initial Limited Edition of just eight pieces.
